BEOWULF Audio Book
lines: 2542-2568 (Andrew W. Yoon)
Original
Hard by the rock-face that hale veteran,
a good man who had gone repeatedly
into combat and danger and come through,
saw a stone arch and a gushing stream
that burst from the barrow, blazing and wafting
a deadly heat. It would be hard to survive
unscathed near the hoard, to hold firm
against the dragon in those flaming depths.
Then he gave a shout. The lord of the Geats
unburdened his breast and broke out
in a storm of anger. Under grey stone
his voice challenged and resounded clearly.
Hate was ignited. The hoard-guard recognised
a human voice, the time was over
for peace and parleying. Pouring forth
in a hot battle-fume, the breath of the monster
burst from the rock. There was a rumble under ground.
Down there in the barrow, Beowulf the warrior
lifted his shield: the outlandish thing
writhed and convulsed and viciously
turned on the king, whose keen-edged sword,
an heirloom inherited by ancient right,
was already in his hand. Roused into fury,
each antagonist struck terror in the other.
Unyielding, the lord of his people loomed
by his tall shied, sure of his ground,
while the serpent looped and unleashed itself.
Translated
Tough and facing the rock cliff, that healthy old-man,
a good man who constantly went though
battles and danger and come through,
saw a stone arch and a flowing stream
that burst from the barrow, burning and passing
an intense heat. It would be hard to survive
unharmed near the hoard, to hold firm
against the dragon in the intensity of the hot flames.
Then he shouted. The lord of the Geats
undressed from his breast and expressed anger.
Under grey stone
his voice was loud and filled clearly.
Hatred was present. The hoard-guard recognised
a human voice, peace was over. Shooting out
the dragon-breath (battle-fume).
The grounds shook.
Down in the barrow, Beowulf
raised his shield: the queer thing
tossed and shook and rigourously
turned on the king, whose keen-edged sword,
an inherited heirloom. Awakened into fury,
the combatants fought with each other.
Resolute, Beowulf enlarged
by his tall shied, sure of his actions,
while the dragon unleashed its terror.
Translated (final draft)
Tough and brave, facing the rock cliff, that respected and prominent old-man,
a good man who constantly went though
many battles and dangers, and survived,
saw an arch of stone and a flowing stream
that rushed off from the barrow, burning and passing
an intense heat. It would be difficult to survive
and go past unharmed by the hoard , to hold take position
against the dragon in the intensity of the hot flames.
Then he shouted. The lord of the Geats
undressed from his breast and expressed great anger.
Under grey stone his voice was loud and filled clearly.
